Ryan Reynolds: “Fox made me remove a Disney joke from Deadpool 2”

Deadpool can joke about anything. Except for this.

Nobody is safe from Deadpool’s fourth-wall-breaking sense of humor, as the Deadpool 2 trailer‘s Thanos and DC Universe references made clear. Well, almost nobody. According to a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, there’s one joke that 20th Century Fox didn’t sign off on for the final cut of the upcoming film:

This is a sore spot for me because there’s a joke in the movie that is not in the movie now because — I’m probably not even allowed to say this — Fox made me take it out,” Reynolds says. “It had more to do with Disney, and they made me take it out. As I look back at it, I think maybe that was a wise decision.

Reynolds’ prudence almost certainly stems from the recent Disney/Fox merger. Although Disney CEO Bob Iger previously remarked on keeping Deadpool’s ribald sense of humor (and R-rating) intact for future endeavors, the censorship of a Disney joke in Deadpool 2 does cause a little hesitance surrounding the subject.

“I really genuinely don’t know a thing about it,” Reynolds says. “I read that Bob Iger felt that there’s plenty of room in that universe to have a rated-R character like Deadpool. This is completely conjecture on my part, but I wouldn’t imagine that Disney bought Fox to dismantle it or something like that. I think that Disney bought Fox so it could have that in its arsenal.”

Does the Disney/Fox merger mean that Deadpool will continue to get censored? What do you think the Disney joke was that Fox removed from Deadpool 2? Sound off in the comments.
