DC Comics’ “New Age of Heroes” continues today with the latest chapter in James Tynion’s second issue of The Immortal Men. A group of heroes who have been hidden for thousands of years is revealing themselves to the world, but why now?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“THE END OF FOREVER” part two! Following the destruction of their base of operations, the Immortal Men find themselves on the defensive! Their only hope rests with an emerging metahuman named Caden Park–but the evil Conquest has gotten to Caden first! Will the remaining few battle-ravaged Immortal Men be able to rescue their young would-be savior? And what connection do Caden’s tactile telepathic abilities have to the survival of humanity?

Why does this matter?

It’s bold of DC to be introducing new characters and there’s clearly a rich lore to explore with these new immortal heroes. This issue fleshes out each hero and gives readers a good idea of what they can do with these mysterious powers.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Ryan Benjamin draws this issue with a style reminiscent of Jim Lee’s, which helps readers forget Lee isn’t drawing the series anymore. Each hero and villain get some time to shine and Benjamin keeps their looks consistent as they attempt to keep Caden Park alive. The reveal of another bad guy is impressive as he sneers in a well-composed sequence.

This issue gives readers a new reason to care about what is going on with a heavy dose of mystery. The immortal characters have stayed hidden for so long; why are they now revealing themselves? Tynion IV does a good job raising that question while the action takes place — good thing, as this issue is nearly nonstop action. There are some strong captions that bookend this issue with Reload talking about his life. Throughout the issue we get interesting tidbits on each hero so by the end you at least get a good idea of what they can do.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Caden ends up taking a back seat as he rushes to stay alive while monsters bite at his heels. Considering he’s the center of all this, and how he got some much-needed character work last issue, it makes it hard to care about what is going on. New details are revealed about his family or at least hints to the bigger picture, but this issue is more of a chase with details spattered in here and there. Since there isn’t much known about the big picture this further strains your interest and makes it hard to care about the characters or what is going on.

Is It Good?

An average issue that helps detail the powers of the characters, but it springs even more questions on a series that doesn’t have a lot of direction. The characters’ powers are clear, but the people are still too vague to really care about what is going on.

The Immortal Men #2
Is it good?
An okay issue with clear details on superpowers, but not enough done to make you care much at all about who these characters are.
Details on hero powers are interesting
New questions and mysteries to mull over
Not much new is revealed about the bigger picture
Caden is mostly on the run with no new details or character work
