‘Supergirl’ opens casting for new transgender character to debut in season 4

“A confident, wunderkind of a fashionista.”

A recent casting call by The CW reveals that season 4 of Supergirl will introduce a new transgender character of “open ethnicity.” The casting call has been circulating the internet, and appears to be for a new character named Nia Nal.

The casting call is looking for a “transgender woman, early 20s, open ethnicity. A confident, wunderkind of a fashionista. Once a political speechwriter, Nia is the newest addition to the Catco investigative reporting team. With her she brings sparkling wit and biting humor but under that banter-y, chic façade, lays a soulful young woman who has much to offer the world. A young “Cat Grand type.”

Some brief amount of dialogue for the character has also been discovered, ostensibly from an early version of a season 4 script:

Supergirl has been seen as LGBTQ+ friendly for some time, especially since character Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) came out as gay in 2016. The addition of a transgender character, who will reportedly play a “significant role” in the show, should only bolster that reputation.

Supergirl season 4 is scheduled to begin in October.
