Judging by the Cover – 6/6/18 new releases

David and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in-a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Toy Editor David Hildebrand and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

David’s Picks:

Star Wars #49
Cover art by David Marquez

Judging by the Cover - 6/6/18 new releases

I am so far behind on this series but I continue to enjoy seeing the gorgeous covers sitting in my short box waiting for me to eventually get to them. This cover is by David Marquez and I dig his layout here. Leia, Han, and Luke are on full display in heroic poses ready to battle. It reminds of the old ’80s Star Wars books that I adored reading when I was younger. Well done, Mr. Marquez!

Harley Quinn #43
Cover art by Frank Cho

Judging by the Cover - 6/6/18 new releases

Ah! Another series that I am seriously behind on. I should really jump on these books, huh? Frank Cho has beautifully illustrated a sleeping Quinn while her pets Bud and Lou eagerly wait for her to wake up so she can feed them. It’s a simple cover, nothing to distract in the background. Harley, with her signature red and black colors, shows that even she needs sleep every now and then.

Justice League #1
Cover art by Tyler Kirkham

Judging by the Cover - 6/6/18 new releases

Well it looks like I will be checking out Justice League this week since Scott Snyder is writing it. If you listen to the AiPT! Podcast, you know that I really don’t like Aquaman, so needless to say Tyler Kirkham’s cover spoke to me because he didn’t include Aquaman, ha ha. No really, I can’t stand Aquaman. Anyway, you have three of DC’s heavy hitters and that is all you need for the cover! All three are in killer poses and Superman just looks straight pissed-off! Looking forward to checking out the book this week!

Eric’s Picks:

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles #6
Cover art by Ben Caldwell

Judging by the Cover - 6/6/18 new releases

I love the mood of this piece. What could be a more fitting end to this series than Snagglepuss walking away from the theater in the rain? Ben Caldwell’s covers have made it onto this list several times, and he pulled it out again for the finale.

Batman #48
Cover art by Mikel Janin

Judging by the Cover - 6/6/18 new releases

There’s a lot to be said for static images that manage to create a sense of movement. Mikel Janin’s composition choices here are strong, and he leads the reader’s eye across the cover very well. My favorite details are the chess pieces sculpted to look like Bat-family members. The splatter effect of the background adds to the sense of chaos as well.

Justice League #1
Cover art by Ben Oliver

Judging by the Cover - 6/6/18 new releases

Like a lot of other people, I’m excited about this series’s Justice League Unlimited-esque roster. This cover by Ben Oliver further amps up that excitement; what a great group-shot! Wonder Woman ready for battle, The Flash running, Hawkgirl preparing to soar, and Martian Manhunter featured prominently, as he deserves to be. This cover gives a great first impression.
