The Promised Neverland Recap – Chapter 89

Leuvis isn’t going down easily…

Welcome to AiPT’s weekly The Promised Neverland recap column. As new chapters are released, I’ll be sharing my reactions to the series’s latest twists and turns. From bloodthirsty demons to elaborate battle strategies, writer Kaiu Shirai and artist Posuka Demizu always have something compelling up their sleeves. Be warned, though, that in order to elaborate on my thoughts I will be including SPOILERS.

Last week’s chapter ended with a major “Oh shit” moment as Ray and the Nameless Geezer showed up and shot Leuvis’s mask off. It was a much needed moment of hope in the face of a seemingly insurmountable enemy, but things never look up for too long, do they? Now that he’s finally encountered a group of worthy opponents, Leuvis seems all the more motivated and dangerous. Just check out his expression upon getting his mask blown into pieces:

The Promised Neverland Recap - Chapter 89

That’s a really giddy look for someone who just lost their main source of protection…

Upon removing Leuvis’s mask, Emma and company put the rest of their plan into action. They rightly assume that in order to take the demon down they’ll have to weaken his senses, and so they render him blind with a flash bang. Unfortunately that’s not enough, as Leuvis proves how dangerous he can be with just his sense of hearing. After slinging glass at his opponents, Leuvis tracks Pepe down by the sound of his pained grunts. After dispatching Pepe, Leuvis uses his brute strength to tear down an entire building, forcing his remaining opponents to relocate. Leuvis may be wounded, but he’s far from out. If anything, he’s now at his most deadly.

Unfortunately, we don’t get much focus on the human characters in this chapter. The Goldy Pond crew members still haven’t received enough fleshing out to be particularly compelling. As a result, they’re more or less just props that help Emma and Ray on their quest to survive. It’s also worth noting that neither Ray or the Nameless Geezer get any badass moments here, despite how big of a deal their arrival at the last chapter’s cliffhanger was. I’m still invested in the pair because of their development in past chapters, but they don’t actually get to do much here. This is Leuvis’s show–and while he’s certainly entertaining, he’d be all the more menacing if we got to feel the other characters’ dread and desperation.

The Promised Neverland Recap - Chapter 89

Just look how threatening he is, calmly destroying entire buildings while blinded!

Art-wise, Demizu delivers good work as always. Her panel sequences depict the flow of action at various dynamic angles that lead the reader’s eye along smoothly to the next image. Leuvis is consistently frightening thanks to his disturbingly ecstatic expressions, and his long, billowy cape continues to be pleasantly dramatic. My only complaint with this chapter’s art pertains to the moment where Leuvis throws glass shards at his enemies. The panels in question have an odd amount of white space and look blank rather than intense and focused.

Overall, I enjoy this chapter even though it doesn’t meet the same high bar as last week’s installment. Chapter 89 features some very well-rendered action, and it makes it clear that Leuvis won’t go down without a fight. Though this arc could use some stronger character work, I hope that the new supporting cast members will blossom more once Leuvis is finally out of the picture.

That’s all for this chapter! Stay tuned for more recaps as The Promised Neverland updates every week.
