Steve Trevor returns in first look at Wonder Woman 1984!

Chris Pine will officially return as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984 – but should he?

Director Patty Jenkins dropped a surprise gift for her Twitter followers this morning, tweeting out a first look photo at the Wonder Woman sequel (now officially titled Wonder Woman 1984) featuring the return of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.

As you probably expected, the internet blew up with joy and anticipation as soon as the photo went out with fans speculating on how Steve Trevor would return – but the question that I have is not how Steve will return, but whether or not he should.

Admittedly, my first reaction to this news was pure excitement. I mean, who would say no to more Chris Pine? Then there is the fact that the relationship between Diana Prince and Steve Trevor was the heart of the first Wonder Woman film, and I would be kidding myself if I said that I didn’t want to see more of them together on the big screen. However, the more I sat with this news, the more I began to wonder if bringing back Steve Trevor was a good idea.

One of the most common complaints about superhero movies is that they do not have high enough stakes. When a character seems to bite the dust, you can rest assured knowing that they will come back somehow since you are watching a superhero movie, after all. In Wonder Woman, Steve’s sacrifice was crucial not only to the film but to Diana’s character arc as well. Her interactions with him before his death are a big part of what shaped her into the hero we know and love today. Does bringing him back retroactively make their arcs in the first film less impactful?

Of course, we cannot know for sure until we see how his return is handled and after that great first film, I have to completely trust Patty Jenkins to get this right.  Still, as it stands right now, I am pretty conflicted on Steve Trevor’s return. I am dying to see his reunion with Diana, but I hope it is done in a way that doesn’t take away anything from the first film.

Do you think bringing Steve Trevor back is a good idea, or do you think they should have left his sacrifice serve as his final moments? Are you excited for Wonder Woman 1984? Let us know down below, and check back for more DCEU developments as they occur!
