Judging by the Cover – 7/4/18 new releases

JJ and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in–a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Cosplay Editor JJ Travers and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

JJ’s Picks:

Sword Daughter #2
Cover art by Greg Smallwood

Judging by the Cover - 7/4/18 new releases

Despite being relatively simple, this cover puts you right where it wants you to be. There’s a sense of awe and mysticism being conveyed that immediately has me wanting to know more about these people. My eyes drink in the viking ship, the young girl on the prow, her guardian, and suddenly I can almost hear the creaking of the ship as it slowly glides through the mist. Sword Daughter’s cover has done its job well; I’m intrigued.

Star Wars #50
Cover art by Travis Charest

The wound of Carrie Fisher’s passing is still too fresh not to feel something whenever I see an image of Princess Leia. There isn’t another individual I can think of that possesses such a natural sense of majesty, grace and elegance. I love the artist’s choice to include the blueprints of iconic starships from the Star Wars universe over a backdrop of outer space, both of which are contained within Leia’s dress. You have a sense of elegance and then your eyes drift down the page and you see something that’s both unique and creative.

The Curse of Brimstone #4
Cover art by Philip Tan

Judging by the Cover - 7/4/18 new releases

I’ve never heard of this book and I have no idea what’s happening here. That being said, I really want to read it. I think it’s safe to say “badass” does a pretty good job of encapsulating what’s going on here. Some sort of monster that looks like a cross between a facehugger and a zombie is battling what appears to be a fire demon. Yeah, I’m sold.

Eric’s Picks:

Catwoman #1
Cover art by Joelle Jones and Laura Allred

Judging by the Cover - 7/4/18 new releases

I miss the days when it wasn’t unusual for comic book covers to feature word balloons. This example is fun and cheeky; I love when characters address the reader a la Sensational She-Hulk #1. There’s a certain whimsy to this entire piece that I love, and those cats are adorable. Good work, as expected from Jones and Allred.

Batman #50
Cover art by Joe Jusko

Judging by the Cover - 7/4/18 new releases

There’s a lot going on here, but in a good way. The swirl of the fabric on Selina’s dress is gorgeous, and the variety of textures conveyed across the cover is impressive. I especially love the cat-shaped rug, as well as the items splayed across the floor. From color to composition to line-work, this piece impresses all around.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #1
Cover art by Gabriele Dell’Otto

Judging by the Cover - 7/4/18 new releases

This Gabriele Dell’Otto piece is just gorgeous. Ghost Rider is a character who always looks great when rendered in a painterly style. The flames around his head really pop, and the shine on his leather and chains is excellent. This cover is equal parts lovely and badass.
