The Flash season 5 first look is here

You get a trailer! And you get a trailer! We’re all getting trailers!

Warner Brothers is going wild with the trailers at San Diego Comic Con this year and we aren’t about to start complaining. The latest to grace the halls of SDCC 2018 is The Flash season 5 and this one looks like quite the doozy.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Let’s all say it together, WOW.

Even though the mysterious bad guy with a breathing problem closes the trailer out, I’d like to start with him. Thanks to Flash executive producer Todd Helbing, we know this villain to be Cicada, played by Chris Kline. Helbing announced Kline would play the show’s newest villain during a panel this weekend.

Pulling from the pages of DC comics past, we learn that David Hersch aka Cicada, murdered his wife and sought to end his own life in retribution. Before he could follow through with his plan, he was struck by a bolt of lightning and discovered that he had gained the ability to absorb the life-force of others. This led to Cicada becoming a cult leader and one of the Flash’s primary adversaries.

“So we always take these villains from the comics and put them through the Flash blender. he’s not so much a cult leader but his powers sort of present a challenge to team Flash that they’ve never dealt with before.” said Helbing on Cicada.

Cicada isn’t the only new face on the block, the Flash gang is receiving a new member. At the end of season 4 Barry destroyed a satellite before it crashed in Keystone City, well it turns out he didn’t do it alone. Nora West-Allen aka XS, Barry Allen and Iris West’s future daughter, helped Barry destroy the satellite and is now stuck in the past with her future parents. That sentence confused me as I wrote it.

It should be interesting to see what Nora’s big secret is, as the trailer leaves us on a cliff hanger with Nora stating “I think I’ve made a big mistake.” Barry has to deal with the time paradox Nora’s presence creates and his worry that his daughter could “Marty Mcfly herself out of existence.”

I’ve saved the best for last. Barry is FINALLY getting a piece of Flash lore that fans have been asking after since the show first debuted. The long-anticipated signature Flash ring. The ring was first introduced to the world back in 1956, in Showcase #4. The ring holds Barry’s costume to make it easy for him to don his costume, no matter where he may be. Through a tiny spring-loaded mechanism, the ring expels Barry’s costume, which he then dons at super-speed.

The Flash season 5 premiers October 9, 2018.
