Teen Titans GO! has polarized fans of the Titans since its debut in 2013. There is no doubting the popularity of the franchise, however, and it has crossed into many mediums. Along with the well received Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, the mobile game Teen Titans Go! Figure was recently released on iOS and Android.
The game seems simple enough. You collect figures (Teeny Titans) and as you come across opponents, you choose your team for battle. The first few battles I spent more time looking at the cute graphics and listening to the rocking soundtrack before realizing I had not won a battle since the opening. It is was then that I decided to pay attention and just blow through the battles.
I then learned just how deceptively difficult GO! Figure is. Engagements are contested in a manner similar to the Active Time Battle system made (in)famous by certain Final Fantasy games. GO! Figure is slightly different as instead of waiting for the bar to fill up, attacks and buffs are placed along the bar.
This is where the strategy kicks in. Spamming the first attack can be done, but these tend to be the weaker abilities. The obvious thing to do is wait a little longer and use the more powerful skills. The catch is your opponent’s ATB bar is filling up the same time as yours. Waiting for that more powerful middle attack from Cyborg is a good idea in theory, but the additional seconds it takes to get there can be the difference between winning and losing. Add in that you will be switching between up to three characters per battle and things can quickly become very chaotic.
There is also a category system that makes it harder than just picking the heroes with the highest health. Teenies and their enemies are grouped into groups with classifications like “dark arts” or “cute.” Strategy in GO Figure! begins even before the battles start.
The music is a mixed bag. ‘The Night Begins to Shine’ by B.E.R. plays during many of the bigger battles and it is amazing. It is so good the rest of the game’s soundtrack is hindered by it. For example, the song chosen for the Metropolis map would stand out in any other game, but in GO! Figure it just becomes less repetitive than the other songs.
The voice acting is well done in the cut scenes and fans of the show will be impressed. During the actual game, it is the same sound bites and they surprisingly do not get annoying even hours into the game. Quite simply the game is fun enough to allow these things to be overlooked. That being said, Starfire’s speech pattern gets very annoying, especially since the game requires a fair amount of reading.
The graphics are nicely done and will appeal to fans of the show and gamers. GO! Figure takes visual cues from the animated series, but the tone and humor make it work for those who are not familiar with the show. The game is filled with bright colors and big eyes while some of the attacks are mini cutscenes in themselves. These moments look like they came out of the show itself and they never get boring.
Teen Titans GO! Figure will fool many people at a glance. It is almost too colorful and silly to be taken seriously. But those who take the time to play the game will find a fun strategy game that will test your skill and patience.
