Castlevania’s Simon and Richter Belmont join ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ roster, and more from today’s Nintendo Direct

Tons of new Smash news from today’s Direct.

Nintendo held another edition of Nintendo Direct this morning focused on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, giving more detail to some of the new characters who will be playable in the upcoming fighting game. Today, all eyes were on the Castlevania series, as vampire hunters Simon and Richter Belmont were announced as playable characters.

Simon was introduced as “the far-flinging vampire killer,” and his long-range flail took center stage. It was mentioned that Simon has a longer average reach than any other fighter. Richter is Simon’s echo fighter, meaning their abilities are very similar.

The two characters also have some additional traits: arch-nemesis Dracula will appear in the battlefield once in a while, causing havoc wherever he appears. Under what conditions will he appear? Only time will tell, it was said, but it won’t be often.

Alucard is making it to the game in the form of an assist assist trophy, employing a similar fighting style to his appearance in Symphony of the Night. Lots to look forward to for Castlevania fans.

In addition to two Castlevania-themed fighters, Smash Bros. Ultimate will feature 34 music tracks from the series, including new and classic tunes. Castlevania has always been known for its classic themes, so it’s exciting to see this much care taken with songs from the franchise.

In fact, music will work a little differently in Ultimate: the game will feature an absolutely staggering 800+ music tracks to choose from, and can now be divvied up by franchise. For instance, if you’re playing on any Zelda-themed map, you can choose from any Zelda song, whether it’s from Breath of the WildOcarina of Time or even Termina Field from Majora’s Mask.

And there are a looooot of stages to choose from: Nintendo is boasting over 100 stages to choose from, including tons of remastered stages from the Nintendo 64 and GameCube iterations of the game. There’s a new system where you can choose two maps, and halfway through the battle, the first map will morph into the second. Cool stuff.

There was a lot more announced on today’s Nintendo Direct, including Dark Samus and Chrom appearing as echo fighters, so be sure to watch the entire announcement. Just as the announcement ended, it was announced King K. Rool of Donkey Kong Country fame will be a playable character as well.

Still not word on Waluigi. Sigh.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be released December 7 on Nintendo Switch.
