Judging by the Cover – 8/15/18 new releases

JJ and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Cosplay Editor JJ Travers and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

JJ’s Picks:

Babyteeth #12
Cover art by Garry Brown

Judging by the Cover - 8/15/18 new releases

Well this certainly looks like a feel-good happy time! Talk about an unnerving piece of cover art. Garry Brown is certainly excellent at making people uncomfortable. This is my first exposure to Babyteeth and I’m definitely going to check it out thanks to this fantastically depressing cover art. I just have to know why this person’s life sucks so much. It definitely doesn’t hurt that Donny Cates is writing it either.

Terminator: Sector War #1
Cover art by Robert Sammelin

Judging by the Cover - 8/15/18 new releases

You had me at Brian Wood writing a Terminator story in New York. Ok but let’s pretend I don’t know Brian Wood’s at the helm. We’ve still got a badass-looking New York City cop holding a pump shotgun and bulletproof vest, with a Terminator ominously poised behind her. Robert Sammelin knows how to get folks’ attention. I also particularly enjoy how the smoke blends the buildings and Terminator together.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron #30
Cover art by Phil Noto

Judging by the Cover - 8/15/18 new releases

This shot makes the Resistance’s song by John Williams start playing in my head and immediately brings to mind their entrance across the water in The Force Awakens. I like to imagine the image of an X-wing in the sky striking fear into the heart of every Stormtrooper the moment they see it. Especially when they know that Poe freaking Dameron is behind the controls. Phil Noto helps bring all of that magic to life for me and that’s something I cherish as a Star Wars fan: someone who can take the franchise and breath life into it in a medium outside of the films.

Eric’s Picks:

Edge of Spider-Geddon #1
Cover art by Gerardo Sandoval

Judging by the Cover - 8/15/18 new releases

Rock on! How could I not pick this Gerardo Sandoval cover? It’s got the best Spider-Man surrounded by a crowd rocking out with him! This piece has an infectious sense of fun to it. From the silver spikes to the denim jacket, every part of this is metal.

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #308
Cover art by Chris Bachalo

Judging by the Cover - 8/15/18 new releases

This is fun work as always from Chris Bachalo. The idea of Spidey chilling with beach gear atop Sandman is fantastic. It’s the sort of creative utilization of characters’ powers that one never sees coming. Like the previous Sandoval piece, this cover has a sense of joy and wit that perfectly fits the series.

Crude #5
Cover art by Garry Brown

Judging by the Cover - 8/15/18 new releases

I love the sheer intimacy and vulnerability on display here. The characters’ love for each other is clear and poignant, and it contrasts effectively with the tragedy implied by the background details. This cover accomplishes the most important task covers have: to make me want to buy the product, even if I’m not already familiar with it.
