Judging by the Cover – 8/29/18 new releases

JJ and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Cosplay Editor JJ Travers and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

JJ’s Picks:

Isola #5
Cover art by Karl Kerschl

If you have coin Khajiit has wares! Sorry I couldn’t help myself. But to be fair this cover does have a very distinct Elder Scrolls feel to it. The classic fantasy map immediately puts my mind towards Middle-earth and a world Bethesda dreamed up. I’m heavily digging the blue tone coloring the two characters against the white backdrop, it makes both the foreground and background stand out. As a fantasy addict I’ve seen all I need to for this book to be added to my pull list.

The Joker/Daffy Duck Special #1
Cover art by Brett Booth & Norm Rapmund

There’s something extremely unnerving about this incarnation of Daffy Duck. I don’t know if it’s the bird feet, how thin his legs are, or his posture–whatever the reason, I find myself made far more uncomfortable by his presence than the Joker’s. The cloud of HA! HA! HA! surrounding these two couldn’t be more appropriate and I’m down with the unusually heavy arsenal the Joker is packing. There’s no doubt this is the perfect pairing between Looney Tunes and DC characters.

Beyonders #1
Cover art by Wesley St. Claire

You had me at “one-eyed, flatulent Welsh Corgi”, but hey the fantastic cover art doesn’t hurt. We can gather that these two are treasure hunters of a sort, Egyptian ruins may be involved, and they’ve got themselves a sidekick with an eyepatch. Yeah, I’d like to know more about what’s going on here, even if the young man with the torch is holding it far too close to the flame.

Eric’s Picks:

Venom: First Host #1
Cover art by Rod Reis

Judging by the Cover - 8/29/18 new releases

What a great cover to start off a new Venom series. I love how he blends in with the black background, and how Rod Reis hits all the character’s key visual motifs: the white eyes, the spider symbol, that gigantic tongue. This is nice work all around.

Venom: First Host #1
Cover art by Gabriele Dell’Otto

Judging by the Cover - 8/29/18 new releases

Yet another solid Venom cover this week. Gabriele Dell’Otto does a great job conveying a sense of violence even though there’s only the one character pleasant. The shine on Venom’s teeth, the twists of his tongue, the spit flinging off of it. Beautiful horror.

The Joker/Daffy Duck Special #1
Cover art by Brett Booth & Norm Rapmund

I dig this one because it really sells the zaniness of the comic’s concept. This is exactly the sort of cover that needs a speech bubble, and it gets right to the point. Both Joker and Daffy look over-the-top, their conflict is ridiculous, and I’m curious to see how the actual story unfolds.
