The hunt for Wolverine continues this week as all the miniseries that lead to this come together. We’re talking literally coming together, as Daredevil, Kitty, Tony Stark, and the information shared by Sabretooth all converge. Will it mean we’ll find Logan soon? You betcha!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

Read our preview.

Why does this matter?

For months we’ve known Wolverine was coming back, so this is the kind of series that has us on the edge of our seat. Logan is finally back from the dead and we’re going to find out where he was and how he comes back into the fold. At least we hope!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Writer Charles Soule does a great job with this book to the point where it feels event-level in scope. It opens with a mysterious set of scenes that suggest younger people are being kidnapped. It adds a question mark to the entire story and comes back to reward readers in the end. Much of this book is exposition to help us catch up with the Hunt for Wolverine miniseries that lead to it, but there’s also some big action to be had as well as a major reveal or two.

The biggest win for this series is how Soule delivers on heroic moments as well as a major villain reveal. I don’t want to spoil it, but heroes like Iron Man, Kitty, and Storm all get moments to shine. Soule does a good job managing the various plot threads characters are dealing with while focusing our attention on the plots at hand. Most folks are going to be talking about the last few pages of this issue which help converge the previous miniseries.

Speaking of which, these miniseries actually make more sense after reading this issue. I can’t say Soule 100% makes you believe they needed to be written, but he certainly draws the threads together. Wolverine is very close to coming back and it’s exciting to read this book in large part because the buildup was so long (and, at times, tedious), so the answers are much deserved.

Ramon Rosanas draws a good superhero book. Iron Man and the rest have some big heroic feats to take on in this issue which work wonderfully. The smaller comedic moments are pulled off too. There’s a darker tone to this work and that suits the very big question mark we’re left with.

It can’t be perfect can it?

It takes quite a while for this issue to get going. It’s a good thing it’s a longer issue because it takes about 10 pages to get to the exposition-heavy scenes that help tie all these miniseries together and then another nine to get to the immediate action and conflict. That’s a lot for the reader to endure and I suspect if you haven’t read all the miniseries you’re going to wish the plotting was tighter. The nine pages that lead to the conflict are very heavy on exposition, too. Daredevil, for instance, explains what his mission was in a laborious way to fill in the reader, which screams contrived in the grand scheme of things. This is a comic book so it’s expected, but the way this story paces out it could have been more interesting and more economical.

Is it good?

I ended up liking this issue a lot more than I expected given the frustrations I had with the miniseries that lead to it. It’s a good kickoff issue to be sure, and it has event-level vibes that make this exciting too. If you’re on the fence I say grab it to be ready when Wolverine, eventually makes a return.
