Judging by the Cover – 9/5/18 new releases

Max and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comic releases.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured contributor Max Sisco and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Max’s Picks:

Harley Quinn #49
Cover art by Frank Cho

Judging by the Cover - 9/5/18 new releases

Frank Cho’s work on these Harley Quinn variants has been stellar. The amount of detail and craftsmanship put into this cover is just breathtaking, as is the color palette.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #70
Cover art by Sara Richard

Judging by the Cover - 9/5/18 new releases

Not only is this cover off the hook in both concept and exposition, but Sara Richard has been doing consistently stunning covers for the flagship MLP series for the entire 70 issue run. The juxtaposition of the beautiful color choices and technique with the hilarity of Rainbow Dash playing bingo is too perfect for words.

United States Vs. Murder Inc #1
Cover art by David Mack

Judging by the Cover - 9/5/18 new releases

I really like this cover for it’s simplicity but also it’s deviation from the norm for the artist. Mack is obviously well known for his watercolor covers so to venture away from that to better fit the comic is impressive. Stark and sinister, this cover makes me feel uneasy for no earthly reason. It’ll also be impossible to find in high grade 20 years from now.

Eric’s Picks:

Avengers #7
Cover art by Clayton Crain

Judging by the Cover - 9/5/18 new releases

When I first heard that there was going to be a Ghost Rider from 1,000,000 B.C., I didn’t quite envision this. I love it, though. A nearly naked man with nothing but some straps on, a flaming skull for a head, and a mammoth steed? That’s just beautiful.

Snotgirl #11
Cover art by Bryan Lee O’Malley

Judging by the Cover - 9/5/18 new releases

I love this. The style is vaguely reminiscent of Bratz dolls, and it fits the characters very well. Lottie’s bright green hair really pops against the white of her shirt and the blue of the background. This cover is just plain pleasant to look at, and it has personality to boot.

Venom: First Host #2
Cover art by Mark Bagley & Richard Isanove

Judging by the Cover - 9/5/18 new releases

I dig this because of how goofy it looks. That big symbiote face on the right just looks ridiculously cheerful. The character in the middle is also intriguing; they look like a mix between Venom and Nova. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here, but I’m curious to find out.
