Is It Any Good?: Sex and the City (2008)

It seemed like everyone got their “happily every afters” when the series ended.

Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte… the gang’s back! And it’s been four years since the popular HBO series surrounding their lives ended. When we left them, it seemed like everyone got their happily ever afters; but is it that simple and what’s in store for the film?

If you didn’t watch the TV show, then you might not be that interested in seeing this. However, I think this can still be enjoyed by those who didn’t watch Sex and the City on HBO. Plus, those who are worried about being lost get almost  everything they need to know explained in the first few minutes.

After reminding everyone where we left off with these women, our movie begins with the main focus being on Carrie and Big getting engaged. For those who watched the show (like myself), this may worry you because Big doesn’t exactly have the best track record with commitment. Well you’re right, because things don’t exactly go as planned. Though Carrie and Big are the main plotline, the other girls also have unexpected things come up. Miranda’s marriage is challenged, Samantha is experiencing urges outside of her relationship, and Charlotte has a nice surprise coming her way.

There’s a reason I loved the series, and why I still watch it when reruns come on TV. It was wonderfully written, funny, endearing and showed different types of women who had different philosophies of life. For example, we had the rather conservative Charlotte who’s goal was marriage and wasn’t much for sex without meaning. Then, there was Samantha, who didn’t believe in marriage or long lasting relationships. Her love was sex, and plenty of it. The show never shamed either of these characters, both philosophies were accepted and it showed different lifestyles work for different people and we’re not all the same. That way of thinking holds true for the movie, too.Is It Any Good?: Sex and the City (2008)The witty humor that was so prominent in the series is here to an extent though one of the negatives is I wish it was more prevalent. It’s not completely without it, but there were times I wished more attention was paid to that aspect since it made the series so enjoyable.

The acting is strong from all involved. Sarah Jessia Parker is great as Carrie, just as she was in the series. She just has a way of bringing that character to life in such a lovable way. Parker as Carrie is one of those cases where I can’t imagine another actor in the role. Cynthia Nixon is great as the ever sarcastic Miranda. Miranda is a character I love because, yes she’s sarcastic and can seem like a pessimist at times, but then we always get to see her vulnerable side and are reminded that everyone puts up walls and is afraid to face certain things.

Kim Cattrall as Samantha is life honestly, I just adore her in this role. I fell in love from the beginning of the series because of the hilarious, brazen way in which she goes about things. She’ll deliver graphically sexual lines in such a brilliant unapologetic fashion, but both the show and the movie remember she’s a person and not just a caricature. Kristin Davis is a good choice to play Charlotte because you believe the conservative Park Avenue look on her. The only think I don’t like about Charlotte, is that they didn’t really give her any good comedy in this movie. Of course, that isn’t Davis’s fault though. Is It Any Good?: Sex and the City (2008)Some of the complaints I’ve heard about the Sex and the City movies revolves around consumerism and the labels. I don’t share this opinion. I love all the labels and the stunning fashion; that’s a trademark of Sex and the City. The clothes and shoes are kind of like the cars in the Fast and Furious movies. We got Louis Vitton, Chanel, Dior, Vivienne Westwood and more. And it’s all fabulous. It’s not to say that all you should care about is a pair of 400 dollar heels or a designer purse, just like the Fast and Furious movies aren’t endorsing driving a sports car off an airplane. It’s a movie and it’s part of the charm and fun of this series. And it’s not the main focus, a lot more attention is put on the characters stories while the clothes and purses and shoes serve as the delicious icing on the cake.

Fans of the series will definitely be into this and people that haven’t watched the series will still get at least some enjoyment out of it, because it’s just a well made film. The writing includes heartfelt dialogue paired with some good comedy, the chemistry between the ladies is as great as it always has been, the Prada is stunning as ever, and it ends on such a great high note. So even if you don’t think you’ll like Sex and the City, grab a Cosmo and give this one a shot. No, it’s not perfect, but it is undeniably entertaining.
