Elvira has been on a long journey through time. The first issue she crossed paths with the famous Mary Shelley, pre-Frankenstein as they searched for a missing doctor. The second issue she drank with Edgar Allan Poe and the pair tangled with Vlad the Impaler. Vlad continues to be a thorn in the side of Elvira and vice versa as they continue their conflict in this third issue. So, is it any good?
What is the book about?
As mentioned, Vlad is still hot on the heels of our voluptuous heroine. Both have time traveled again in the mysterious energy filled coffin which has now transported them to 1890 and conveniently stopped in front of the famous Bram Stoker and his wife, Florence.
Florence takes one look at Elvira and her jealously rages. After a barrage of insults, Elvira cuts Florence off advising that they need to be prepared when Vlad shows up. Stoker dismisses Elvira’s comments and you don’t have to be a genius to guess what happens next. Yup, old boy, Vlad shows up. Florence catches Vlad’s eye and he questions why a woman of her beauty would be with Stoker and decides that she will be his bride instead. And the chase is on as Stoker and Elvira attempt to rescue Florence. Throw in another curve ball at the end and Avallone has raised the stakes! Pun intended.
Florence’s tongue is as sharp as any stake
The Good
I complained a bit about the repetition in the last issue. And I wanted more story instead of these one shot jump through history pieces Elvira was cruising through. Avallone must have read my mind because not only does Elvira make a crack about the repetition, Vlad becomes the much-needed piece to connect the narrative. Now we have danger, a villain, a purpose — we have a story.
Avallone does a great job making me chuckle with Elvira’s continued breaking the fourth wall. She shows the displeasure of having to catch up the reader on what has been going on in the previous issues because Avallone won’t write recaps inside the front cover. Elvira might hate it, but I like this style compared to reading a paragraph at the beginning of most books.
The story does pick up now that Vlad is more involved. There is another surprise at the end of the book adding another layer to the story. A nice touch that will take us further down the rabbit… er, coffin hole?
Dave Acosta is killing it with his artwork. Elvira looks like she stepped right out of the TV. She’s as gorgeous as ever and Andrew Covalt’s colors does a nice job of finishing the big picture. Vlad the Impaler is one evil cat and Acosta does a fantastic job of creating the presence of evil with Vlad. He isn’t one to be messed with!
Come on, Dave! Throw Elvira a bone here.
The Bad
Florence and her slut-shaming Elvira. How dare she? But seriously, if Elvira pops up in front of most women, the threat is going to be there. And Florence doesn’t really turn down Vlad. Stoker blames mesmerism. Sure, Bram, sure.
The Ugly
I don’t know which is uglier, Florence and her attitude or Vlad and his snarling teeth. Call it a tie? Sure, why not? Perhaps Stoker should give it up and let them be together. He might be better off in the long run. Oh! Stoker’s meat sweats aren’t too sexy either.

The Verdict
I dig it! I feel like Avallone has the train rolling again. Not that it was derailed at all, but the second issue felt a bit off after reading the first. But with this new turn of events, I am psyched to see where this will lead. I think if you are an Elvira fan, then you will find this story amusing and exciting to read. New to Elvira? No problem!
