The new ‘Hellboy’ trailer arrives a day early following leak

Hellboy wages a “forever war” in the highly-anticipated reboot.

Following the leak of a low-definition copy earlier today, Lionsgate has debuted the full trailer for 2019’s Hellboy reboot a full day earlier than originally announced!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly movies podcast, Adventures in Movies!

The trailer seems to match descriptions of the footage that was shown during the Hellboy panel at this year’s New York Comic Con, featuring plenty of the bloody action that the film’s cast and crew have been hyping up since this new take on Mike Mignola’s demonic hero was announced.

Set to Billy Idol’s version of “Mony, Mony,” viewers are rapidly introduced to the film’s gruffer take on Professor Bruttenholm, played here by American Gods and Deadwood star Ian McShane. He introduces us to David Harbour’s Hellboy and some of the other misfits in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, who all have varying levels of respect for HB. The rest of the trailer is mostly action shots, culminating in an appearance by the lead villain (Resident Evil‘s Milla Jovovich as Nimue, the Queen of Blood) and an incredibly metal-looking shot of Hellboy at full power.

What may surprise fans is the decidedly campy tone of the trailer, with lots of jokes at the expense of the title character. Whether he’s being fired upon, called a monster, or generally dragged for his appearance, it’s clear that Big Red is dedicated to kicking evil butt and taking names.

What did you think of the teaser? Does it have you hyped for some gothic action or is the tone too wacky for your tastes? Let us know in the comments!

Hellboy, directed by Neil Marshall, opens in theaters on April 12, 2019.
