Superheroes are having a really hard time in more ways than one when it comes to Tom King and Clay Mann’s Heroes in Crisis. It appears Aquaman is the focus in the latest variatn cover for issue #4. In the case of Ryan Sook’s cover, it appears we’re seeing Aquaman’s reason for going to Sanctuary.
For those who don’t know, Heroes in Crisis is about a great many deaths that occur at a rehabilitation center called Sanctuary. The center was created by Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman for heroes to cope with any trauma they faced. It’s completely anonymous and it allows them to get help even when their pride is too great to ask for it.
As you can see in the polaroid rendered by Sook above, Aquaman losing his hand appears to be why he entered Sanctuary. But wait, you might be asking, when did Aquaman lose his hand? Way back in 1994, in Aquaman #2 (written by Peter David and drawn by Martin Egeland) Aquaman gets his hand eaten off by piranhas.
How did this happen? A villain named Charybdis steals Aquaman’s ability to talk to sea life and uses it against him.
One has to wonder if Heroes in Crisis writer Tom King will also have Arthur discuss a similarly traumatic hand-issue he had in Aquaman #4 (2003) when he got a prosthetic hand made of water.
