Somehow I know I have to go down there, but I don’t want to. I’m afraid of what might be waiting for me.
– Jon Snow to Samwell Tarly
The Crypts of Winterfell are the focal point of the Game of Thrones Season 8 official tease, one which sees all three remaining Stark children (sans Bran, although he’s more Three-Eyed Raven than Stark at this point) — Jon Snow, Sansa and Arya — reunited in the cavernous vault below Winterfell where the statues of Winterfell royalty reside. After hearing the voices of Lyanna Stark (confirmed to be Jon’s mother at the end of Season 6), Catelyn Stark and Ned Stark as they pass their respective carved figures, the three Starks see their own statues just as an icy chill suffuses the Crypts.
Just like the previous Game of Thrones Season 8 teaser, this one provides what is sure to be plenty of fan speculation and foreshadowing predictions: Does Ned’s statement to Jon, “You have my blood” indicate that he’ll have to make a critical choice concerning his lineage as Stark or a Targaryen? Does the freezing of the Crypts presage some connection to the White Walkers? Does the fact that Jon’s statue looks older in appearance than Sansa and Arya’s mean anything?
Hopefully the answers to these questions and more when Game of Thrones returns on April 14th.
