A report out of Variety has sci-fi fans in a stir, with yet another big name joining Denis Villeneuve’s Dune reboot – Oscar Isaac. The Star Wars star joins Dave Bautista and Stellan Skarsgard as the most recent additions to a cast that already boasts Timotheè Chamalet and Rebecca Ferguson.
Isaac has been tapped to play the role of Duke Leto Atreides, father of the story’s main protagonist Paul “Muad’Dib” Atreides, and mortal enemy to the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who’s being played by Skarsgard.
Denis Villeneuve will be directing and cowriting the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. Villeneuve has stated he aims to adapt the novel into a two-part film series, with the draft having been finished as of May of 2018.
“Most of the main ideas of Star Wars are coming from Dune so it’s going to be a challenge to [tackle] this. The ambition is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw. In a way, it’s Star Warsfor adults.” said Villeneuve on the script.
Set hundreds of thousands of years into the future, the story follows the Atreides family in their quest for survival as they take over stewardship of the special desert planet Dune — the only place in the universe where the legendary “spice” is found. The planet is filled with lethal traps set by the Emperor and the Atreides mortal enemies, the Harkonnens.
At this time there’s no estimated released date available.
