WonderCon 2019: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns May 10

WonderCon attendees got an early look at season 6 of the hit Marvel TV show, premiering May 10 on ABC.

Marvel President of television Jeph Loeb revealed to a packed WonderCon arena that Marvel’s fan-favorite Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premier its long awaited sixth season on May 10 on ABC.

That’s not all- per the birthday wishes of longtime star Clark Gregg, Marvel showed lucky panel attendees the season six premier, complete with a fan Q&A after. While I can’t give out any spoilers (because Marvel scares me and I’m not a dick), I do have some very positive thoughts on the premier I’d like to share.

If this episode is any indication, this is the most ambitious season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. yet- and I say that as a fan who’s seen every episode at least three times. From the narrative foundation laid, the introduction of new threats, and the special effects this season is poised to be one of the best yet.

Fans of the first four seasons of the show will be pleased to see a return to Earth and a return to dealing with the usual abnormal threats, but fans of the fifth season will also be stoked for the continued galactic adventures teased in the season five finale. This new season’s dual narratives allows the show to experience the best of both worlds- the grounded, espionage action of the opening seasons plus the galaxy trotting, space adventures that made the fifth season such a hit.

The dual storylines that play out together in this episode, also directed by Clark Gregg, feature excellent pacing leading up to an explosive, bombastic climax that sets the stage for an insane season. Not only is this season poised to please longtime fans, it’s exciting and fresh enough that it may pick up a bevy of new followers.

May 10 isn’t too far way, but after that season premier it’s going to feel like an eternity waiting for episode two. For more WonderCon 2019 news, be sure to follow AiPT! Comics on twitter and keep checking
