Everybody loves a good mashup and the third and final crossover between Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has that in droves. James Tynion IV and Freddie E. Williams are back at this crossover fan favorite and there’s a new twist. Or two, or three even!
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
The 80th anniversary of Batman collides with the 35th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this stunning concluding miniseries to the BATMAN/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES trilogy. Our heroes have battled the evil of the Foot Clan in Gotham City and Bane in New York, but now Krang has gotten his hands on the most dangerous technologies in the DC Universe-and no universe is safe from his wrath! Co-published with IDW.
Why does this matter?
Williams has done a masterful job drawing these nostalgic TMNT characters and Tynion has given each series a new entertaining adventure to explore. This final chapter in the trilogy might top them all. Plus, Kevin Eastman contributes to this issue!
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
There are a lot of cool mashups in this issue. Tynion and Williams offer up interesting combos in the villain department taking from Batman’s rogue’s gallery and the TMNT rogues. Consider these mashups double the fun and double the danger for the heroes. The main crux of this issue revolves around an interesting mystery I won’t spoil. By the end, it’s clear this universe is far different than anything we’ve seen before which puts a crazy twist on who Batman is and his origins.
This is an action adventure comic through and through so expect plenty of fight scenes and fun twists. Williams does a great job with character design from Joker to Harley and you must crack this book open, you must, just to see what he’s done with the Bat-cave. As you can see below Batman gets a new look too, which is always fun and he’s also nailed the nightmare-esque red sky with lightning. The use of color by Jeremy Colwell enhances that fun feel too. This is a dark reality and the art helps solidify that.
As a bonus, this issue also comes with a sneak preview of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s final run on Batman. Don’t miss that!
It can’t be perfect, can it?
This is a lighter story to be sure, not necessarily light in the drama department, but in the seriousness. It’s an over the top sort of action adventure, but with walking and talking turtles in your story what did you expect?
Is it good?
This continues to show Tynion and Williams are having a lot of fun with these characters and we reap the benefits of that. This third installment in the crossover universe also takes mashups to the next level. Don’t miss it.
