“The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away,” an image attached to the tweet reads. “He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home.”
Mayhew portrayed Chewbacca in every installment of Star Wars’ original trilogy, Revenge of the Sith in the prequels, and The Force Awakens in the sequels. He stayed on as a “Chewbacca consultant” for The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story as the role transitioned to Joonas Suotamo.
Peter was extremely gracious to his fans on social media and was a frequent commenter on various subreddits. He posted as recently as four days ago.
RIP to Peter Mayhew. May the Force be with you.
