Scott Summers: Avenger? ‘Avengers: Endgame’ screenwriter talks Cyclops

Christopher Markus is a Cyclops fan!

Watch out, Wolverine fans! When the X-Men eventually make their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looks like the forever-controversial Cyclops could be at the front of the line, per a new interview with the screenwriters of the biggest movie in the world right now (safe to assume they’ve got some clout at Disney).

In an interview with Fandango, Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus were asked which Fox characters they would choose to make a movie about. The obvious answer: Scott Summers.

“Well, you’re a Cyclops fan,” McFeely said to Markus, who responded with, “Yeah I’ve always wanted to see Cyclops done with some respect. Feel he’s gotten a raw deal.”

You are correct, Mr. Markus! Make it happen. I mean, what could go wrong?

Markus isn’t the only writer to express a desire to see the “true” Slim Summers appear on the big screen in an interview. When I spoke to current Cyclops author Matthew Rosenberg at FAN EXPO Boston in 2018, he made a similar statement.

“I’d also love to see a Cyclops who I recognize a little more,” Rosenberg said. “I always felt a sort of disconnect from Cyclops. I think the Cyclopses they’ve had as actors have been great and the scripts have been good, but they haven’t felt like my Cyclops.”

Whether the X-Men’s most iconic leader makes his way to the MCU, the most famous movie Cyclops–James Marsden–appears open to playing him… again.

“Sure, I’d be down,” the Sonic the Hedgehog star told “I think that world, there just are no rules. You can do whatever you want. If there’s some iteration down the line where we’re involved… that’s been a special thing to be a part of for a good period of my life and I love those fans and I love playing that character so, yeah, I’d be totally open to that.”

And that concludes this “Cyclops in the MCU” news roundup–what a time to be a Scott Summers fan.

Should Cyclops enter the MCU, what iteration of the character would you most like to see on the big screen? Let us know in the comment space below!
