Star Wars: Age of Rebellion – Lando Calrissian #1 Review

Go on a new adventure in Cloud City with one of the best characters in Star Wars.

Lando is one of the most iconic Star Wars characters thanks to his charm and his scoundrel behavior. He’s probably even more popular after Donald Glover played him in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and this week we get yet another reason to enjoy this sly character.

So what’s it about?

Why does this matter?

Greg Pak continues to bring the hits to fans with his Age of Rebellion series and this week we get a taste of Lando Calrissian. This story is set during his days playing leader for the Cloud City people and is aided by the excellent art of Matteo Buffagni and Tamra Bonvillain.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Disney should seriously consider making a Lando TV show set in Cloud City. How can a guy who is basically a gangster become the ruler of a people? (He says, as an American, in 2019.) That said, this story reveals a softer, more heroic side to Lando as he attempts to keep his city by getting enough scratch to pay the people and any loans that are outstanding. He just does it a little differently than a typical politician. Titled “Cloud City Blues,” this story plays out to show how Lando thinks quickly on his feet and doesn’t let a good city and its troubles bring him down.

As the story unfolds Pak utilizes Lobot quite well which harkens back to Charles Soule’s excellent Lando miniseries. The two are a good team and trust each other implicitly. It’s fun to see how Lando asks Lobot a question, gets the info he needs and carries on. Lobot has zero sense of humor which plays well against Lando’s sometimes shady questions and dealings. Speaking of which, Lando’s main mission here seems too good to be true and ends in a positive light that will make you like the character even more.

Art by Buffagni and Bonvillain, with letters by Travis Lanham, is exceptional. This is a book centered around Cloud City and it doesn’t skimp on scenes with many people (and aliens) in the frame. Lando is drawn confident and in a way that makes him seem to be always thinking. You respect the character because the art makes him a wild card you can’t help but admire. The colors have a subdued palette that ground the story keeping it as cool as Lando himself.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

There are two quick twists that are too easy possibly because the story needs to get over before it’s 20 or so pages. It’s unfortunate because the big conflict is pretty much over before it starts. It took a bit of the air out of the story since it seems like any character, not just Lando could accomplish the task. I guess Lando just got lucky? Of course, luck doesn’t last for folks like Lando.

Is it good?

Yet another great one-shot Star Wars story from Greg Pak. Be excited for Pak taking over Star Wars, as this and the other Age of Rebellion stories have proven he has a great handle on these cherished characters.
