Sony launches Playstation Productions to adapt their own games

The end of poor video game-to-movie adaptations?

Sometimes it’s best just to do it yourself. That was the case with Marvel Studios, when Marvel started making their own shorts, films and shows based on their own comics. Since 2008, that’s been incredibly successful, most especially with this year’s Avengers: Endgame, which is now more successful than Titanic.

Now, it appears Sony is taking a page out of Marvel’s book with Playstation Productions, Hollywood Reporter writes. Surprisingly, Playstation Productions is already working on its first slate of projects. It’s being overseen by Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden.

He told THR, ”We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories. We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum”.

Playstation Productions is headed by Asad Qizilbash, who said, ”Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was to develop and produce for ourselves. One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the Playstation community loves. We talked to [film producer] Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Kevin Feige to really get an understanding of the industry”.

Sony Pictures, sister company of Sony Interactive, will handle distribution, but production will be handled by the new entity. One of the most encouraging things Asad said was about taking the game ”ethos” and from there, writing for the film audience. He said ”you don’t try to retell the game in a movie”, which is very refreshing to hear.

This news excites and intrigues me a lot and I feel it opens up the door not only for more video game adaptations, but also a brighter era for them. What are some Sony games you’d like to see adapted and what do you think of this news? Let us know in the comments below.
