It’s getting to the point where a Tom Taylor written comic is a buy on sight. He literally brought me to tears with his last issue of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, so you know I’m going to read his one-shot War of the Realms tie-in out today.
So what’s it about?
Read the preview.
Why does this matter?
What doth thee think? It has Spider-Man so you know it’s gonna be good.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
As has become customary Taylor continues to write a solid Spider-Man. He’s kooky, goofy, and silly in the face of great danger. At its core this is a Spidey book be it his getting help with weapons, befriending a pegasus he dubs Buttercup, and fighting valiantly alongside his superhero strikeforce. There’s at least 5 laugh out loud moments in this issue. Great stuff.
The others on the team have their moments too. Wolverine, Iron Fist, Cap, and Luke Cage all throw down and have moments in the battle that are badass. Iron Fist even has a hilarious bit of dialogue too. As a team, it’s clear the name strikeforce is leaning into the “strike” part as most of these characters are landing blows to kill.
Taylor is joined by Jorge Molina on pencils, inks by Adriano Di Benedetto, and colors by David Curiel. It’s a super clean looking book with Spider-Man’s costume looking sharp and dynamic in subtle ways. I’m talking the black of his eyes on the mask popping out a bit oh so beautifully here-and-there kind of detail. The color work is fabulous too capturing the lighting and shadow work exceptionally well. This book looks like a million bucks and probably could have served as a straight up War of the Realms main event issue and it would fit right in with Russell Dauterman and Mattew Wilson’s work.
It can’t be perfect, can it?
It almost seems like a mistake for this book to come out when it does since events seen here have already taken place. It’s not a huge deal, but we’re quite a few weeks past this part of the event making it feel too little too late.
Similar to a few other tie-in issues this one isn’t a must read if you’re following the event. It’s a great adventure to be sure, but it lacks any key plot development that’ll matter elsewhere.
Is it good?
A delightful adventure sure to win over Spider-Man fans. Read this one if you want some laughs, superb art, and a little more adventure in your War of the Realms pull list.
