A new era of pro wrestling kicks off Saturday with AEW’s Double or Nothing

All Elite Wrestling looks to deliver under enormous pressure in Las Vegas.

AEW’s upcoming debut show Double or Nothing is the most anticipated non-WWE wrestling event since…well, since the last time Cody and the Young Bucks put together a show. But while All In was a proof of concept, Double or Nothing is the first true impression we’ll have of a rare feat in professional wrestling: a brand new promotion with big money backing it.

A big event obviously requires a big card, and All Elite Wrestling has not disappointed in that regard, at least on paper. Headlining the show will be Chris Jericho vs. Kenny Omega, a rematch of their five star classic from NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 12. The winner of this match will go on to face the winner of the “Casino Battle Royale” that will happen during Double or Nothing‘s kickoff show, dubbed The Buy-In. Whoever wins that match will be crowned AEW’s first-ever World Champion.

Listen above: our breakdown of the card on the Poor Taste Wrestling podcast.

AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes will go up against his brother Dustin, formerly known to wrestling fans as Goldust of WWE. These two have a storied history, being the two sons of wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes, and holding WWE’s Tag Team Championships together as The Brotherhood. For Dustin, it’s “one last ride.” For Cody, it’s the chance to in his words, “kill the Attitude Era.”

A lot’s riding on AEW’s success, and now is the time to strike. As mainstream interest in pro wrestling has increased, viewership and morale surrounding WWE has perhaps never been lower. There is a definite void to fill between what American wrestling fans are hungry for, and what WWE is presenting them.

However, AEW did hit a snag earlier this week when one of Double or Nothing‘s marquee matchups, PAC (fka WWE’s Neville) vs. Adam “Hangman” Page, was abruptly cancelled following reported creative differences. The match originally scheduled for this Saturday went down last weekend at a Wrestle Gate Pro event in Nottingham, England, where PAC lost via DQ, and announced he wasn’t going to AEW.

Of course, AEW is much more than former WWE and NJPW talent, and while the aforementioned matches certainly nab top billing, perhaps even more important to the long term success of AEW is the cultivation of new stars. Running down the full card:
