DC releases Batman: Last Knight on Earth trailer

The final Snyder and Capullo Batman story.

“All stories have an end. Even his.”

DC Comics has released the first trailer for Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s upcoming three-part miniseries, Batman The Last Knight on Earth. The series will be the final Batman collaboration between the pair, after nearly ten years of working together on The Dark Knight. Check out the trailer below.

The trailer is short but what we can grasp from it is that Batman wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world in a Arkham Asylum jumpsuit, and has a jar with him that contains The Joker’s severed head. Members of the Justice league appear to have been corrupted, with Green Lantern constructs in the form of nightmarish babies trying to kill Batman, and Superman clones patrolling the sky. Wonder Woman makes a brief appearance, splattered with blood, sword in hand, and rocking a seriously cool mohawk. There’s some sort of spike covered tank, which I can only assume to be the Mad Max equivalent of the Batmobile.

So where did the idea for this story come from? As it turns out, the seeds for it were laid when Snyder first got his hands on the caped crusader. “Grant Morrison is the one that made me do it. He told me when I was really freaking out when I had Bruce Wayne for the first time”, Snyder said, “He was like, listen, what you need to do is give your version of birth and a death and that’s it. Make him yours.”

“I have more Batman in me, I have stories that I want to do, but this is meant as a kind of closure to the whole saga that Greg [Capullo] and I did.” said Snyder on whether this is really his last Batman story. “It revisits a lot of what we did, but it’s a story I had in my mind for a long time. I pitched it to Greg back when we were doing Zero Year.”

Batman: Last Knight on Earth will be released on May 29 through DC’s Black Label imprint and retails at $5.99. You can read the full synopsis from DC below:

Bruce Wayne wakes up in Arkham Asylum. Young. Sane.

And…he was never Batman.

So begins this sprawling tale of the Dark Knight as he embarks on a quest through a devastated DC landscape featuring a massive cast of familiar faces from the DC Universe. As he tries to piece together the mystery of his past, he must unravel the cause of this terrible future and track down the unspeakable force that destroyed the world as he knew it…

From the powerhouse creative team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, the team that reinvented Batman from the emotional depths of “Court of Owls” to the bombastic power of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, DC Black Label is proud to present the bimonthly, three-issue miniseries BATMAN: LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH, published at DC’s standard comic trim size.

This could be the last Batman story ever told…
