Swamp Thing, DC Universe’s latest live-action series, has been cancelled, according to a Variety report. It is unknown at this time why the show has been cancelled (update: see below).
Swamp Thing premiered on DC’s over-the-top streaming service just last week, to mostly positive reviews. It stars Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, a CDC researcher who investigates a deadly swamp-borne virus in her hometown of Houma, Louisiana. It also stars Andy Bean, Derek Mears, Virginia Madsen, Jeryl Prescott, Maria Sten, Will Patton and Henderson Wade.
It is unknown if any of DC Universe’s other live-action series, such as Titans and Doom Patrol, will be affected. But for now, it appears as if Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson’s creation is returning to the swamp.
Update: Show writer John Gholson provided some insight into what happened on Twitter, explaining it has to do with North Carolina not giving a promised tax rebate. Click into the tweet to read the entire thread.
North Carolina promised a $40m tax rebate that, due to a paperwork error, they were unable to deliver. That was roughly half the proposed budget for s1 (which is estimated at $80m).
