Following the rumors that Melissa McCarthy might possibly play Ursula in Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid, it seems that audiences have some more definite news about the production. The live action The Little Mermaid is set to start production in early 2020 and Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel, the titular mermaid who yearns to be part of the human world above the sea.
Bailey, known for Grownish, Last Holiday, and for being half of the singing duo Chloe x Halle, is making a name for herself as she will become the face of the mermaid princess for new audiences.
Not only has the wielder of the dingle hopper been selected, but audiences also know that Rob Marshall has been selected to direct the live action version. Marshall also directed the 2018 sequel Mary Poppins Returns. In another Mary Poppins Returns connection, Lin Manuel Miranda will collaborate with Alan Menken, the original composer and song writer for the animated feature.
Other casting choices, including McCarthy are still waiting confirmation.
