Guardians of the Galaxy #7 Review

Where is Rocket Raccoon? Find out in this issue!

The big question on the everybody’s mind since Guardians of the Galaxy #1 has been “where is Rocket Raccoon?” The loveable, loud weapon-toting raccoon has been absent since the events of Infinity Wars without any reason given to the readers. This week’s issue of Guardians starts to solve the answer of where he’s been, as well as build new plot threads going forward. Masterfully written by Donny Cates who is joined by artist Cory Smith, Guardians #7 continues the trend of the previous ones of being a well-crafted treat that is accessible to both old and new fans alike.

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

In the aftermath of the FINAL GAUNTLET, the Guardians of the Galaxy are taking some well deserved R&R. But their vacation is about to be cut short when a familiar, but radically powerful enemy returns. And what does all of this have to do with the whereabouts of a certain raccoon?

Guardians of the Galaxy #7 Review

Tell me about it!

The Universal Church of Truth have always been one of the more out-there aspects of Marvel Cosmic. They’re a group of religious fanatics who worship the avatar of life, The Magus, and have weapons that are powered purely by the faith of the followers. This makes them a force to be reckoned with due to their religious fanaticism and sheer numbers. They have Templeships, which are as big as warships and just as dangerous. Oh, and to make it all even more complicated, The Magus? He’s the evil side of Adam Warlock. The last time the Church were a huge threat they brought through the Cancerverse, a world where the avatar of death had died and life had won. Life was unending and they started to transform into Eldrich-type horrors of tentacles and teeth. They’re genuinely a scary lot due to just how powerful they are. Tearing a rift even wider to unleash undying hordes onto the universe in an effort to destroy the very concept of death is not something to bat an eye at, and the fact that they’re back with seemingly even more powerful weapons means something dangerous is coming.

New to the series is artist Cory Smith, who previously did work on the Guardians Annual and is now taking over from Geoff Shaw, who brings some amazing linework and panelling. The opening few pages that constitute a slow zoom of the weapon on the Templeship is fantastic, and shows how large the ship really is. Smith was an amazing replacement for Shaw and I have no doubt he’s going to kill it on the art going forward.
