Judging by the Cover – 8/14/19 new releases

JJ and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Event Coordinator JJ Travers and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

JJ’s Picks:

Sword Daughter #8
Cover art by Ben Oliver

Dark Horse Comics

The artwork is just crisp, clean, simple and downright beautiful. I also find it super creepy and uncomfortable. You don’t know who this girl is but you fear for her. These nuns appear oh so menacing and you can almost hear them shouting gospel at their new convert. The fear in this girl’s eyes is vivid. Such a simple image evokes so much emotion. Fantastically done.

Road of Bones #4
Cover art by Alex Cormack

IDW

No idea what this book is about, but after seeing this image I’ve gone and picked up the first issue. Is there a better compliment I can pay the artist? Doubtful. Either way, we’re greeted by a creepy gore splattered cave with some kind of nasty poking their head out. No clue what’s going on here, but I know two things: it’s not good and I want in.

Punk Mambo #5
Cover art by Daniel Brereton

Valiant Comics

This is a badass cover. Plain and simple. The hair, piercings, tattoo, fish hooks, bobby pins, patches and pins — I love it all. And unless I’m blind, or a dope, it looks like there’s a chicken foot hanging off the right side of her jacket. So much of this image evokes nostalgia in me, but even if you aren’t a former knucklehead that got into trouble and spent half your 20s at basement shows, you can still appreciate how well drawn this is. Oh, and I love, love, love the logo.

Eric’s Picks:

Silver Surfer: Black #3
Cover art by Tradd Moore

Judging by the Cover - 8/14/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

Another month, another great cover for this series. This is a visual delight with all the bright colors and the twisting lines; the variety of shapes to the alien life here is impressive. There’s so much going on but this image is busy in a good way. It’s overflowing with the energy of life and classic sci-fi ideas of what that life might look like on other planets.

Gideon Falls #16
Cover art by Andrea Sorrentino

Image Comics

This series has had consistently strong covers as well. I’m a big fan of images crammed inside other images, and the rendering of one man looking forward within another man’s profile shot is cool. The bold red background also stands out from the more muted tones in the middle while still matching their foreboding mood.

Silver Surfer: The Prodigal Sun #1
Variant cover art by Ron Garney

Marvel Comics

What a neat idea! Besides how cool the content is, I also dig the plethora of lines on display here. From the spacesuit to all the floating technology there’s a lot to take in. The use of blue in rendering the literally cosmic background is also nice. This is a cover that really has a touch of humanity to it, even as its subjects are up high among the stars.
