Disney confirms Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Ewan McGregor returns

The Force is with Star Wars fans.

It’s official: Ewan McGregor is returning to his legendary role as one of the most beloved Star Wars characters of all-time, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The news was announced by Ewan McGregor and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy Friday night at Disney’s D23 Expo fan-convention as the final part of the Star Wars panel. McGregor asked Kennedy to please ask him if he’s going to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again, Kennedy did and he finally answered, “Yes.” The reaction from fans in attendance is fairly easily to predict, nonetheless the moment was really special and I wanted to make sure our readers can witness it themselves. Enjoy it below.

Not to worry, fans won’t have to wait too long to see Obi-Wan wielding his lightsaber once again. Kennedy told the expo audience that the scripts have already been written and filming will begin next year in 2020.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s untitled live-action show will join two other Star Wars series that are already in the works, The Mandalorian, which premiere’s on launch day of the Disney+ streaming service, and an untitled show based on Diego Luna’s Rogue One rebel spy character, Cassian Andor, which drops next year.

The iconic role of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi was first established by Alec Guinness in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, as the kind and wise teacher to a young Luke Skywalker. Even though his character perished in the first film of the trilogy, Guinness appeared in the following two films as a Force Ghost and continued to guide Luke on his journey to defeating Darth Vader and the Emperor.

As Obi-Wan, Guiness spoke of fighting in the Clone Wars with Luke’s father and the character from that era was brought to life by McGregor in the prequel trilogy beginning with 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. McGregor’s portrayal of the legendary Jedi Knight quickly earned himself a place as one of the most beloved Star Wars characters of all-time and has had fans begging Disney to have him reprise the role ever since.

McGregor performed a brief voice cameo in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and ever since fans have been in a near frenzy amidst a swirl of rumors that the beloved actor would return to his legendary role. Well, Obi-Wan Kenobi is back. The rumors are done and over-with, and poor Mr. McGregor can finally stop dodging questions about the role from friends, fans and reporters.

“I have the high ground.” Damn right he does.
