Miles Morales is gone. He’s buried inside a Symbiote drone and he can’t get out. Thanks to Carnage Miles isn’t in control of himself. Luckily he’s not dead, but in this issue, Carnage sends him on a mission to kill an innocent person. Well, mostly innocent if you don’t count those times he tried to kill Spider-Man!

So what’s it about?

Why does this matter?

Saladin Ahmed and Federico Vincentini are getting into the horror spirit thanks to the twisted and very unnerving body-snatching going on in this series. Never forget though that Miles’ heart and heroism can’t be snuffed out so easily!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Recap time!

The dueling voices inside Miles and the Symbiote are fascinatingly done in this issue. Miles is dying to gain control of himself but can’t thanks to the god-like power of Carnage. The pulling back and forth of control builds towards a finish that should have folks talking for a while; it also reveals Miles’ ability to free himself and reflects on how strong his will is. I also loved how Ahmed and Vincentini show the Symbiotes at the start like a pack of rabid wolves.

Since this is a event tie-in the issue is also filled with surprises. From the person Carnage wants dead to a surprise two thirds through you’re going to be on your toes reading this one. It’s elements like this in a fight comic that keep your interest up. It can’t all be kicking and punching!

Vincentini does a great job with the action scenes too. The speed of the Symbiotes in this story is impressive and there’s some well rendered close ups–especially the full page splash below–that’ll have you leaning back from the beasts on the page. There’s a kinetic energy to everything in the book too that helps remind us this is an action book and a lively one.

Freaky!

It can’t be perfect, can it?

As fight comics go this book offers enough to chew on character-wise, but I did find fight scenes a bit long. Maybe it’s the understanding characters really aren’t in danger (certain characters can’t die!) or maybe it’s because a cliffhanger is coming and you can sense the kicking and punching isn’g going anywhere.

The book also lacks a purpose as far as the hit Miles is tasked to make. I’m sure we’ll find something out about it later, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense Carnage the god is wanting this specific person dead.

Is it good?

A good second issue that plays around with the identity crisis of being taken over by a Symbiote. This book has heart and speedy action keeping you on your toes. I’m not certain this is a must read to follow the event, but it’s definitely entertaining.

The push and pull of Miles gaining control of himself is compelling
Great art especially for a fight comic like this. It's very kinetic
A fight scene later in the issue feels long
Hard to gain interest in the person to be killed with no explanation
