Funimation announces returning shows, new shows, and movies at NYCC 2019

One Piece, My Hero Academia, and a ton more was announced at Funimation’s panel at NYCC today.

AiPT! was on hand at the Funimation panel at New York City Comic Con. The panel opened up with hosts Lauren Moore and Jacki Jing introducing fans to the panel, followed by a video celebrating 25 years of Funimation, which is quite a feat, considering that after 25 years, only Crunchyroll has as much attention in the United States among anime fans. The panel covered the gamut of all the offerings Funimation has to offer in the coming months, everything from returning shows, new shows, and movies. Let’s dive in.

Returning Shows

Several favorites are making a return; the pending fall season has everything to keep enthusiasts pleased. All the shows on this list are expected to make their returns in the October.

Several returning series will continue their runs, with no premiere dates in sight, just fresh and new on a weekly basis. Fire Force will continue to run through the fall season with new episodes every Friday. Dr. Stone will run concurrently from the summer season to the fall season; expect new episodes on Fridays as well. Asta and Yuno’s journey to magical greatness endures in Black Clover; new episodes will air every Sunday. Radiant, Ensemble Stars, Fairy Gone, and Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of life will all premiere this month. With so many shows, you could understandably believe that anime fans would be satiated, but don’t forget Funimation’s two big guns: One Piece and My Hero Academia.

One Piece is the epic pirate saga that keeps on giving. Monkey D. Luffy and his gang’s ongoing quest for the Grand line might seem to have reached its limit, but this is anime, and their story has only scraped the surface of what’s in store.

Simulcast Saturdays at 9:00pm CT

My Hero Academia is presumably Funimation’s most prolific show. Thankfully, the wait is nearly over, as the lowerclassmen will return on October 12th, 2019. Fo the first time, My Hero Academia will have same-day simuldubs. Before any fans launch into a subs vs. dubs debate, just know, you’re both covered, enjoy what you like.  Continuing the story of Deku’s internship, the fledgling hero finds himself struggling to keep up with upperclassman Mirio. Deku also sported a fresh new look in the trailer, with an open mask exposing the lower half of his face, not unlike Batman’s.

New Shows

The panel wasn’t only about old hats, as several new shows are on the horizon. Thankfully, the new series are an eclectic mix of genres, ranging from high fantasy to mystery, and even a protagonist with a gun for a head. Yup, his head… is a gun. Anime, everybody.

Fate Grand Order, Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia is another series in the line “Fate” Series. Fans should know what to expect: iconic heroes from the annals of history are drawn into epic battles, usually for the fate of the world or some McGuffin. In the case of Babylonia the series is set in an era where gods and humans live shoulder to shoulder, but will soon part ways.

Simulcast Premieres October 5

Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious plays on all the fan-service one can ask for but manipulates the tropes to its favor to create a series that is equal parts satire and new-age fantasy. When an overly cautious hero is summoned to save the world of Gaeabrande, the goddess that summoned him gets more, or less, than she expected when he takes on simple missions and low-level opponents.

No Guns Life is a very interesting new series from VIZ Media and the team behind Black Lagoon. After a massive war that took its toll, former cyborg soldiers, known as The Extended, were discharged. Among them is Juzo Inui, whose memory was wiped, and whose head was transformed into a giant gun. When a fellow Extended showed up in Inui’s office, Inui’s already complicated life is thrust into a whirlwind of street punks, megacorporations, and special agents out for his head (or gun… just go with it). Expect to see No Guns Life later this month.

Aazur Lane was described by the panel hosts as “a squad of badass female characters.” Kind of on-the-nose to say the least. Set on the high seas, the women of the army group Azure Lane are formed to battle the mysterious threat.

Movies

If new and returning series aren’t your thing, I’m not sure why you’re here, but let’s run with it; maybe you can enjoy the movies Funimation has on the horizon. The panel announced two films premiering in October, one based on a long-running series and another that reaches the fringes of heady dystopian future drama.

Human Lost is coming to select US theaters on October 22nd (sub) and October 23rd (dub). The riveting sci-fi film based on Osamu Dazai’s No Longer Human novel and is from the creators of lauded titles like PSYCHO-PASS, Afro Samurai, and Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters.

One Piece Stampede will have its theater run from October 24-31. The film broke Japanese box office records, the studio behind Digimon and Dragon Ball worked on the film. Considering the adulation fans shower upon the series, it isn’t exactly a tough pitch. Presented in Japanese with English subtitles Oct 24, 29, and 31. Dub fans can watch on October 26th and 30th.

Future Teases

To close the panel Funimation provided short a teaser for Plunderer, a series premiering in January 2020. A trailer was played for the winter 2020 series, set in — what else — a post-apocalyptic world. Humanity is now identified by numbers, with each person branded with their own “Count.” The count identifies a new related to their life, but the stories behind each number can reflect any number of things, whether it be how many children you will have, or how many days you have left in life is anyone’s guess.

January 2020

There was once a time when there was a dearth of anime to satisfy fans looking for their anime fix. With so many Funimation shows and movies to occupy your time, the question now stands: What will you watch first?
