Judging by the Cover – 10/16/19 new releases

Dave and JJ share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media and Content Manager David Brooke and Event Coordinator JJ Travers attention this week.

Dave’s Picks:

Captain America #15
Cover art by Alex Ross

Judging by the Cover – 10/16/19 new releases

Cap recently lost his country hence, I think, why Ross cast him in this slice of darkness. It’s a great way to convey he’s a man without a nation, but he’s still fighting the good fight. On the right and left we see Spider-Woman and Steve looking downcast over the whole thing which adds emotional weight to the meaning.

Gideon Falls #17
Cover art by Andrea Sorrentino

Judging by the Cover – 10/16/19 new releases

I’ve yet to read this series (I know, I’m a dope!) but damn is the art consistently making my turn my head. Here we have Sorrentino breaking up the cover into puzzle pieces beautifully with the exposed brain in the process of being covered by said pieces. There is a deeper meaning at work here that’s incredibly artistic and creative.

Absolute Carnage #4
Cover art by Ryan Stegman

Judging by the Cover – 10/16/19 new releases

Good lord, how long did it take Stegman to draw all these blood droplets?! The detail is exceptional here, capturing the fluidity of the blood really well. The river of blood Venom is standing in is also impressive. Liquid is tough to capture on the page and Stegman is blowing us away with this rain shower.

JJ’s Picks:

The Marked #1
Cover art by Brian Haberlin & Geirrod Van Dyke

Judging by the Cover – 10/16/19 new releases

Image Comics

I’ve never heard of this series before today, but the cover immediately grabbed my attention. The red foreground against the gray and white background really makes the tattoos pop out at you, and upon closer inspection you can appreciate all the little details and intricacies the artists took the time to include. There’s no question what the title is referencing here. I’ll definitely give this book a shot to see if the other magical tattooed warriors all look as cool as this one does.

Last Stop on the Red Line #4
Cover art by Sam Lotfi

Judging by the Cover – 10/16/19 new releases

Dark Horse Comics

Awww hell yeah man, what a dope cover! As a Bostonian I appreciate the link between the MBTA red line service and a pile of skulls. Jabs at my public transit aside, the creativity of replacing the man’s eyes with the train lights is just awesome. It feels like two separate images, which I’m not sure I normally like in my covers, but in this case it works great. This feels ominous, dangerous, and has my gut telling me to get away from that train.

Once & Future #3
Cover art by Dan Mora

Judging by the Cover – 10/16/19 new releases

BOOM! Studios

This has so much of what I’m looking for in a fantasy book: Arthurian zombies, blood and guts, and a hero wielding a badass sword. The fact that Dan Mora is the artist just makes me feel like I’m being spoiled. Seriously, the guy is so ridiculously good. You can tell our hero is in trouble, but determined nonetheless. I feel compelled to pick up a sword and follow him into the fray. Some covers are so good that they stir the spirit of adventure within you — this is one of those.
