Marvel Comics’ January 2020 solicitations: 5 big takeaways

Star Wars and X-Men heat up and…Hulk becomes Spider-Man?!

As we begin to close out 2019 and start to look ahead to 2020, the comic book medium is at a strong place. Sales seem to be up across the board, new ideas are refreshing some of our favorite characters and titles, and in general, there may never have been a better time to be a comic book reader! It’s the perfect time to take a peek at the Marvel Comics solicitations for January, which reveal things already announced at NYCC like Donny Cates and Nic Klein taking over Thor, or more recently in our exclusive that Web of Venom is carrying Normie and Dillan’s story forward.

Dawn of X heats up starting with X-Men

Starting with the X-Men and the Dawn of X line, Jonathan Hickman and R.B. Silva are teaming back up for X-Men #5 which hints at the “surprising return” of an old nemesis. Who could that be since most of the X-Men’s enemies are living on Krakoa and are good guys? In issue #6 with art by Matteo Buffagni, Mystique plays a big part. She couldn’t be the nemesis referenced in issue #5, right?

In Marauders the solicit hypes the fact that there are two Omega Level mutants on board. We know one is Iceman, but who is the other?

In X-Force, it appears Domino and Forge are working together. In Excalibur, Apocalypse is attempting to reach the “Otherworld.” And in Fallen Angels, Bryan Hill and Szymon Kudranski’s series appears to have Cable turning on X-23! Drama abounds.

Tom Taylor takes on Hulk…and Spider-Man?

In what appears to be a one-shot story, Tom Taylor is teaming up with Jorge Molina to tell a tale of Spider-Man becoming the Hulk. Bruce Banner apparently gets free of the green goliath, but it somehow connects to Peter. The fact of the matter is since when does the Hulk switch hosts? Is the Hulk a Symbiote now?!

Peter Parker is a man with the proportional strength and agility of a spider, capable of lifting trains on his bad days. And he’s about to get a big, green power-up — with a temper to match.

Conan goes on an adventure with Moon Knight

When Marvel regained the rights to Conan the Barbarian, I assumed they’d continue the tradition of telling great fantasy stories. I had no idea they’d soon have him fighting monsters with Punisher and now, in these solicits, teaming up with Moon Knight. The third and fourth part of the “Serpent War” storyline continues and it looks like a relic comes into play. Given Moon Knight’s connection to ancient Egypt, this crossover makes some sense! Also, check out Giuseppe Camuncoli’s epic connecting cover below.
