Anyone who’s been paying attention to Wonder Woman 1984 knew this announcement was coming, but now it’s official: Pedro Pascal is playing Maxwell Lord.
Patty Jenkins, the films director, first revealed Pedro Pascal looking like a Wolf of Wallstreet-esque businessman back in July via her Twitter account. Which all but confirmed that Pascal would be playing the villainous mastermind.
Jenkins once again took to Twitter Thursday to share news about the film, but this time no teasing involved, only confirming what we all already knew — Game of Thrones veteran Pascal will play opposite Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah in the highly anticipated blockbuster sequel.
“Well hello… Max. #WW1984,” Jenkins tweeted, tagging Pascal in a post of the comic book image of Maxwell Lord.

Created by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire, Maxwell Lord is a rich and powerful businessman who was initially a benefactor and ally to the Justice League, helping form Justice League International. This wouldn’t last long, as Lord was soon revealed as an evil mastermind that was manipulating the Justice League in hopes on dominating the entire human population. Lord later gained ability to sense and control the minds of others, becoming an extremely dangerous telepath. Wonder Woman and Lord are closely associated within the comic book community as Lord pushed our favorite Amazon Princess to her absolute breaking point, forcing Diana to kill Lord by snapping his neck.
Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot as Diana/Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord, Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta, and Robin Wright as Antiope. The film opens on June 5, 2020.
