Naughty Dog’s upcoming anticipated sequel The Last of Us Part II has a new release date of May 29, 2020, the developer announced via a post on Sony’s PlayStation blog. The game was originally slated to come out in February.
Last of Us Part II director Neil Druckmann explained the decision to push the release date back by simply stating, “as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality.”
He then went on to explain that the only two options they had at that point were to either release an unfinished game, or push back the release date. “We went with the latter,” he said, “and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.”
While it’s disappointing to have to wait an extra three months to get our hands on The Last of Us Part II, it’s hard to disagree with Naughty Dog’s decision making process here, especially in a gaming industry that has lately been plagued by unfinished, beta-quality games being released at full price and overworked developers.
Bravo to Naughty Dog for making a difficult decision that is definitely the right one.
The Last of Us Part II will be available on PlayStation 4 May 29, 2020.
