Like ‘The Outer Worlds’? Check these movies out

You can enjoy ‘The Outer Worlds’ beyond the game.

The Outer Worlds from Obsidian is a deep role playing game that mixes elements of science fiction, dark humor, and exploration. Expectations have been sky high since the game was first announced. Fortunately, it has lived up to the hype. The game has received much fanfare from those who have played it. The enjoyment does not have to be limited to just the game, however. Here are some movies fans of The Outer Worlds may enjoy.

Galaxy Quest (1999)

The 1999 Star Trek homage sees a group of actors dragged into a situation they may were not prepared for. Along with plenty of action, the movie is very funny. Sound familiar? Galaxy Quest knows how to laugh at itself without mocking the genre or its fans. It tells a serious story while also having fun.

Spaceballs (1987)

Much more satirical than The Outer Worlds, this Mel Brooks comedy is an absolute treat to watch. The wacky crew of the Eagle 5 will remind new viewers of the Obsidian game’s companions. The main villains also suffer for a small bout of incompetence. Both also have creative and hilarious weapons. Too bad there is no mawg in the game.

Cosmopolis (2012)

There is more the The Outer Worlds than just spacefaring comedy. A main theme of the plot is the power of big business and how it corrupts. Robert Pattinson teamed with David Cronenberg and gave the first great performance (non Twilight division) of his acting career. The movie takes a scathing look at the uber rich in a way that is almost off putting. The obliviousness and lack of care in which the wealthy see the rest of the world is highlighted in both Cronenberg’s movie and the RPG.

The Fifth Element (1997)

Aesthetically, nothing looks more like Obsidian’s game than this 1997 fan favorite. (Parvati’s outfit has to be some kind of homage, right?) Garish colors, amazing costumes, and a vibrant setting are just some of the highlights of Luc Besson’s movie. The movie is also packed with action and adventure, but it never loses its playfulness.

Color Out of Space (2019)

The Outer Worlds also looks a whole lot like the most recent entry on this list. Though the entirety of the movie takes place on one world – Earth! – those who have seen both will be quick to point how much the two look alike. Obviously, the vivid colors stand out, but the creature design in both is fantastic. The Outer Worlds also has its assortment of odd characters while Color Out of Space has Nicholas Cage.
