Blizzard announces Overwatch 2 at Blizzcon 2019

The world is getting more heroes.

Blizzard officially announced Overwatch 2, the second installation in the wildly popular first person multi-player shooter at BlizzCon 2019 on Friday afternoon.

Rumors about the game first emerged back in June when Kotaku published a report citing anonymous sources from within Blizzard that shared that a Starcraft first person shooter, which had been in development for two years, was canceled to shift more resources to the development of Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

Watch the Overwatch 2 cinematic trailer below:

Overwatch 2 promises:

  • An invasion by the ominous Null Sector
  • New hero missions
  • Highly playable co-op
  • Level up your heroes
  • Skill trees
  • Customizable abilities
  • New core competitive PVP mode: Push
  • New look for all our favorite heroes
  • New maps
  • Brand new hero, Sojourn
  • Multiple other new unnamed heroes
  • A ton of PVE content

BlizzCon and Overwatch 2‘s announcement comes at a challenging time for Blizzard. Last month the company banned professional Hearthstone player Blitzchung for his peaceful protest in support of Hong Kong during a post-match interview. The fallout from Blizzard’s decision has results in a large controversy for the company that’s results in large scale protests and many players cancelling their Battlenet accounts.

Overwatch was released three years ago and has grown exponentially ever since. Boasting a player base of over 40 million, its own esport, Overwatch League, which has twenty teams from across that globe and has secured major sponsorship deals.
