Thursday afternoon in an Instagram post Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson announced the official release date of New Line Cinema’s Black Adam — December 22, 2021. A new piece of concept art from the film by Jim Lee and Boss Logic accompanied the announcement.
The Rock plays the film’s leading role as Black Adam, one of DC’s most powerful villains. The December 22, 2021 release date puts the film on a collision course to go head-to-head with James Cameron’s Avatar 2, which will be released a few days earlier on Dec. 17, 2021.
Created by C.C. Beck and Otto Binder, Black Adam first appeared in March 1994 in The Power of Shazam! graphic novel. The character was initially known as Teth-Adam, a young Egyptian prince who sought to impress the wizard Shazam and inherit his powers. Black Adam was initially a hero before falling into darkness after the untimely deaths of his family. He would later go on to become the nemesis of Shazam! and one of the most dangerous villains in DC Comics.
2021 is a big year at the movies for DC. Alongside Jaume Collet-Serra’s Black Adam is Matt Reeves’ The Batman, opening on June 25 and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad drops on Aug. 6.
