Captain Marvel #12 Review

Thor vs. Captain Marvel, who ya got?!

This week, Kelly Thompson and Lee Garbett join forces for Captain Marvel: The Last Avenger. Judging by the cover, this is going to be a throwdown fight comic for the ages. First up, Captain Marvel vs. Thor, who ya got?

This is a quick read, to say the least. It opens with Thor clearing ice off the Avengers home base when a masked Captain Marvel shows up to kick his butt. The two fight across the globe and it’s quite clear they are closely matched save for Mjolnir. Thompson is certainly making a statement as we see she can stand up against a god and then some. The meatier moment in this issue comes on the very last page and should have fans talking. Why is Carol Danvers fighting Avengers? A hint is made there.

That has to hurt.

Garbett draws a good fight comic with Tamra Bonvillain backing him up on colors. I particularly like how thick Thor looks, putting him at a size that is larger than an average person. It gives him a weight and looks of strength that defines the fight well. Carol is basically a svelte, energy-wielding force while Thor is a bruiser. You certainly feel it when they trade blows and Garbett’s style suits the larger-than-life fight. Bonvillain proves yet again her colors are some of the best in the business. The energy coming off Captain Marvel looks great and the details in the suit pop thanks to the red in the suit.

This book is simply too quick, with many pages taking only seconds to read. It’s certainly decompressed — the fight scene takes up 95% of the book, flanked by captions to capture the heavy burden Captain Marvel is under as she beats Thor senseless. Art can sometimes look too basic too, with backgrounds reduced to a rocky edge and flat color. This issue could have used an additional scene with characters talking, or some kind of exposition, to give it more life. I was left wanting by the end and while it’s perfectly good at what it does, I don’t think the amount of content you get is worth $3.99.

Cool new look.

I’m intrigued by this new story arc, but as a first issue, there isn’t enough here to warrant the price. There is just enough here to make you ponder what is going on, but not enough to satiate your Captain Marvel needs.

Is it good?
I'm intrigued by this new story arc, but as a first issue, there isn't enough here to warrant the price. There is just enough here to make you ponder what is going on, but not enough to satiate your Captain Marvel needs.
The fight itself is entertaining
The cliffhanger gives us just enough to ponder what is going on
Super fast read that doesn't quite hook you in just yet
