New Mutants #4 Review

The dangers of Krakoan life-saving drugs comes into focus.

Ed Brisson and Marco Failla’s takeover of New Mutants continues this week and the focus is Boom Boom’s drinking problem (more or less), kidnapped mutants trying to stay alive, and the danger pharmaceuticals bring to innocent folks who just need a cure. The Dawn of X line continues with an interesting look at how Krakoan medicine is affecting the world around them.

This issue opens with Boom Boom having way too much to drink at one of the nightly Krakoan parties. Soon she realizes Armor, Glob, Maxime and Manon aren’t back from their mission of finding Beak and Angel. That’s no good and it’s something we the audience already know. Soon we’re learning about the terrible acts of scientists who charge way too much for life-saving drugs which are the motivator of the enemy who has kidnapped Armor, Glob, and all the rest to wrench some control in an unfair world. However honest and true this story is to our own world the tattooed macho character is clearly moving into an industry that has a void and wants to make life-saving drugs his business.

An interesting element of this issue is how Brisson and Failla depict some rather dangerous mutant actions. Boom Boom’s drinking problem appears to be a key element of her character currently as it comes into play later in the issue. Her inclusion in the story adds a bit of chaos to an otherwise sensitive situation as children are being held at gunpoint. Other mutants do some rather dangerous moves to escape their captors and Glob seems to be the only character with some sense. While these mutants are good guys it’s interesting to see how these powers can be used frivolously, endangering lives.

The data pages in this and the last issue are a unique way to add color to the stories. They read like real-life information pages–in this issue, we get a break down of the Republic of Costa Perdita–and both have made me check Google to make sure they aren’t actually real they’re so well done. It adds a layer of reality to the story that grounds things a bit.

The art by Failla with colors by Carlos Lopez is bright and a bit cartoony by comparison to other Dawn of X titles. Considering Glob, Boom Boom’s actions, and the colorful design of the villain it suits the story. The story is a bit heavy, but the creators do their best work where it counts and that’s with facial expressions and framing to help convey character acting.

A good second issue focusing on the Krakoan drugs and how it may be putting all mutants in danger. How can you live in the world when humans are well aware you have life-saving drugs at your disposal? It’s an interesting concept that Brisson is exploring.

Is it good?

Weaves in Boom Boom well and captures a sense of danger amongst mutants using their powers frivolously
The concept of pharma adds meaning to the book
The art is a bit too simplistic for the heavier story going on here though it does its job with character
