WandaVision And More: What’s Coming to Disney+ in 2020

Disney+ has only been running for a few months but it has already made a splash with regards to streaming platforms. The service has a large catalog of TV and film to draw from along with their original programming. With the new year beginning, Disney teased what fans can look forward to in 2020. Let’s take a look at all the newly announced content from the recent trailer.

FOR THE KIDS

Creating films based off of modern literature is quite common in Hollywood because of the built in fanbases. There will be two upcoming movies from books including the teenage tale about love and nonconformity, Stargirl, and the children’s detective story, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made.

In addition, a contemporary science fantasy about super powered peacekeeping royalty will arrive entitled Secret Society of Second Born Royals. If you were a fan of the animated duo of Phineas and Ferb, they return to save their sister in The Phineas and Ferb Movie: Candace Against the Universe.

For Toy Story lovers, we’ll see what Bo Peep has been up to since the second film in the animated short, Lamp Life. Then there’s the charming, Diary of a Future President; a series that follows a 12-year old girl as she navigates middle school and aspires to be a future president of the United States.

FOR THE KIDS WHO GREW UP

Nostalgia used to be saved for things from the 90’s and earlier but now we’re approaching a time where people reminisce about the aughts. Lizzie McGuire is receiving a revival with Hillary Duff reprising her role, now as a 30-year old New Yorker.

Meanwhile, still in its first season, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has already been renewed. The East High School drama in and out of the classroom can be enjoyed by old diehards and a new generation when it returns later this year for season 2.

DOCUMENTARIES

Disney has experienced box office success with their nature-based feature films and now you can watch some of them in the privacy of your own home. Both Penguins and Dolphin Reef will be coming to the streaming service. Also, keep an eye out for the just announced, Elephant, to premiere.

It’s not all nature though. See a different perspective of known travel destinations in the series, Rogue Trip. Journalist, Bob Woodruff, and his 27-year old son bring viewers off the beaten path to areas tourists don’t normally visit.

Then from producer and NBA superstar, Lebron James, is Becoming. Learn about the humble beginnings of today’s most well-known entertainers and athletes. The docuseries travels back to the subject’s hometown to learn about their rise to stardom.

BLOCKBUSTERS

Disney was responsible for some of the biggest theatrical hits of 2019 and they will soon appear on the streaming platform. Film sequel, Toy Story 4, and the live-action adaptations of Aladdin and Lion King are arriving.

Plus, you can’t forget that Star Wars and Marvel call the mass media company home. Their first breakout hit, The Mandalorian, returns for its next season this fall. Also, we’ll finally receive a conclusion to Star Wars: The Clone Wars as the series will air its final season.

Keep an eye out for the two comics shows as well. We already knew that Sam and Bucky would help usher Marvel Studios into Disney+ this year with Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, what was surprising was WandaVision, featuring the Scarlet Witch and Vision, was pushed up from 2021 to this year. Will this change help attract more subscribers?

THE REST

These last two additions didn’t fall under the other categories so they were grouped together. Short Circuit: Experimental Films began with a program that allowed Disney in-house animators to pitch ideas for a short film and if chosen, would have the backing of the studio and their fellow artists. The final products of the selections are featured.

Finally, Jim Henson’s lovable characters come to Disney+ in the short form, Muppets Now. It will follow the same “unscripted” format of the short-lived ABC show and will also feature celebrity guests.

Disney+ is building upon a strong start by bringing in more new and exclusive content to their streaming service. They provide a wide variety of programming from shorts, shows and movies. Surely, there will be more announcements as the year progresses but hopefully this first initial preview of 2020 can stir up excitement.
