Acclaimed JoJo Rabbit director Taika Waititi has been approached to develop a new Star Wars movie, according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter.
As many Star Wars fans know, Waititi is no stranger to the galaxy far, far away. He directed the final episode of The Mandalorian’s first season and voiced the assassin droid turned caretaker IG-11, both garnering widespread affection from fans.
While there has yet to be an official comment from Disney or LucasFilm, it’s no surprise to hear Waititi is being courted for a Star Wars movie. Aside from his success both on and off-screen in The Mandalorian, Waititi reinvented the MCU’s iteration of Thor with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and his most recent film JoJo Rabbit has been nominated for six Oscars- including best picture.
Disney is putting film releases of Star Wars on hold now that the Skywalker Saga has concluded with The Rise of Skywalker, especially given the lukewarm response to the film. Instead, Disney is focusing on Disney+ offerings with The Mandalorian season two in development alongside the untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor shows.
It is safe to assume it will be a while until Waititi can bring a new Star Wars film to theaters- and that’s if Disney is able to sign him to the franchise in the first place. Waititi has a quite busy schedule, with his upcoming film Next Goal Wins in postproduction and his MCU Thor: Ragnarok follow up, Thor: Love and Thunder, set to start production late this summer.
