Anime Boston to host Japanese hip-hop group m-flo

m-flo joins GIRLFRIEND as the event’s musical entertainment.

Boston – Anime Boston, the largest anime convention in New England, announced its second Japanese guest today.  Musical group m-flo will be appearing at Anime Boston at the Hynes Convention Center, Boston, Mass, on April 10 through 12, 2020.

m-flo was initially formed in 1998 by VERBAL and ☆Taku Takahashi, who were classmates since elementary school.  Shortly after LISA joined as vocalist and the three of them officially debuted as “m-flo”. The mixture of LISA’s unique vocals, VERBAL’s bilingual flow, and ☆Taku’s exceptional production resonated in the independent music scene, and they gained immediate national attention in Japan.

Their first maxi-single “the tripod e.p.” marked their major debut in July of 1999, which charted 9th on the Oricon charts. They went on to release 12 singles and 2 original albums, and their 2nd album EXPO EXPO sold over 800,000 units. LISA departed from the group in 2002 to pursue her solo career, but VERBAL and ☆Taku continued as m-flo.

Their subsequent release in 2003, was the Loves series; a collection of collaborations with different artists, which was an unprecedented case in Japan. They held concerts in major venues such as Nippon Budokan and Yokohama Arena, and appeared at festivals such as ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL and SUMMER SONIC.

m-flo garnered a dedicated following by collaborating with 41 different artists, ranging from underground and mainstream.  Taking the Japanese music scene by storm, they continued to produce music with numerous artists internationally and expanded the creative horizons.

In 2017, m-flo fully revived with original members LISA, VERBAL, and ☆ Taku Takahashi after 15 years since LISA left the group.  In 2018, they released new songs including “the tripod e.p. 2.” Since then they have performed at ROCK IN JAPAN FESTIVAL and SUMMER SONIC, as well as making multiple television appearances.  They have also continued producing songs with other artists.

“I have had the pleasure of experiencing m-flo live and they put on a fantastic show,” said Kristen Leiding, Anime Boston Chair.  “Their music catalog has a little something for everyone and they really know how to have fun with the crowd. Anime Boston’s attendees are in for a real treat. I hope everyone is ready to dance!”

In 2019, m-flo celebrated the 20th anniversary of their major debut with the release of their new album KYO, bringing a new breeze to the Japanese mainstream scene again.

Previously announced guests include Michelle Ruff, Brittney Karbowski, Maile Flanagan, GIRLFRIEND, Brittany Lauda, and Matt Shipman.
