Marauders #6 Review

A great action-adventure issue.

In Marauders #6 things heat up and I’m not talking about Pyro. Kate “Kitty” Pryde continues to be the red queen in a new role where she’s the captain of a pirate ship aiming to level the playing field. What happens when some heavy bad guys show up to crash her decks? More excellent Shadowcat action that’s what!

You have to be a special kind of crazy to dub yourself “Hate-Monger” but that’s where we’re at with the opening of this book. We soon see Pyro and Iceman down for the count, but Kate Pryde cannot be contained. Matteo Lolli and Mario Del Pennino draw a strong issue thanks to the clever use of Kate’s powers to evade and save her crew. It helps there are a few plot twists to be enjoyed keeping your interest up as things shift around and our understanding grows. That includes some new insight into Kate’s inability to go through the Krakoan portals and an ending that’ll have you wishing there was a lot more to read.

Gerry Duggan continues to prove Kate is one of the best because of her resourcefulness. She can’t fly into a sun, but she can get out of tricky situations thanks to her wits and bravery. She’s also quite caring. This is juxtaposed well with Sebastian Shaw and the Homines Verendi, the main villains in this first arc who seem to relish being bad and doing the wrong thing.

This book continues to be a delight with fun pop-culture references and the very wild Pyro character. In one of the funniest data pages yet we learn what he’s up to on the boat when they’re not actively in a mission. What he watches and drinks is pretty great. There’s also a fun reference to Iceman’s extracurricular activities that continues to confirm he’s gay. A welcome sight.

If you were to define this book with one phrase it would be, “The plot thickens.” What many might fail to realize is this is economically rich storytelling with exposition, character, and action are all woven together very well. It’s a quick read, but upon reflection, you’ll value how much Duggan is putting into the book. The subplot of a character shrinking down (seen in the preview) and going inside Pyro is so quick you could practically miss it, which gives credence that it’s worth a re-read at the very least.

Another pro of this issue is how much Lockheed gets to do. Usually, window dressing to Kate Pryde, Lockheed gets to kick butt and factor into the plot very well. If you were to look for a fault it might be how these rather seasoned superheroes casually disband. Hell, Pyro should at the very least be looked over closely to make sure he doesn’t die from that wound, right?

This is a great example of how mixing plot, character, and action together perfectly can make a comic read quickly and yet you’ll want to read it all again when you’re done. As far as action-adventure comics go Marauders is one of the best.

Is it good?
This is a great example of how mixing plot, character, and action together perfectly can make a comic read quickly and yet you'll want to read it all again when you're done. As far as action-adventure comics go Marauders is one of the best.
Blends a lot of story telling elements efficiently
Solid art especially when Kate is fighting and using her powers
A lot of plot twists
Some convenient things occur when superheroes should know better!
It's a brisk read
