In this issue, our intrepid porcine pal has entered the regular Marvel universe to get help, while back in New Yolk City, the plague of discoloration continues. Is it good?
For a book that embraces the ridiculous whole-heartedly (in that vein I apologize profusely for this review’s subheader), writer Zeb Wells packs a ton of plot into this cartoon pig invading Earth, while keeping up the puns and visual gags on every page. I especially like the gag of Peter Porker breaking the fourth wall and the literal page to put in his two cents. Wells does a great job of mixing humor for every age throughout the book — kids will get a huge kick out of the cartoon animals fighting evil, while grown-ups will appreciate the inside nods to Marvel history and more adult humor, like Mary Jane getting freaked out after she realizes she’s been spoon-feeding jam to an adult pig.
Overall the book is incredibly fun, especially for someone who loves puns and slapstick gags. A couple of times I did have trouble figuring out the plot, mostly in the New Yolk battle scenes. This was partly how that side of the story was broken up by the alternate scenes in the “real” world, and partly because Will Robson drew those scenes with a ton of action and chaos, layering rubble and multiple character fights and explosions in panels that also overlap. His animal versions of all the Marvel characters are hilarious and delightfully round and cartoony, but a bit less action in those particular panels would make the characters pop more and make the action easier to follow. I do love how he draws Spider-Ham; Robson uses the pig’s entire body to show his endless self-confidence in every stance and gesture. It’s perfect physical comedy.
This book is so enjoyable and the last panel made me laugh out loud. I’m definitely ready for more Spider-Ham in my life.
